What Can Be Done?
Stop Single Use Plastics
The ineffectiveness of single use plastics harms not only whales, but a large majority of sea animals in the ocean; use reusable utensils, cups, containers, and avoid bad waste!
Safe Boat / Ship Precautions
If you are ever the captain of any type of boat or ship, know the speed limitations, and be on the look out for whales in the future route. Avoid cruise lines or boats entirely!
Reduce Your Carbon Footprint
This is something that seems hard, but is actually pretty easy! Our CO2 emissions contribute heavily to global sea warming and acidification which in turn affects the whales ecosystems and other species, ride a bike, walk or jog short distances, check out this site for more!
Write to Government Officials
Although Northern Atlantic Right Whales and many other marine species are protected under the Endangered Species Act, allocation of funds and legislation to further prevent their death are still possible options, write to elected officials and get a movement going!
Buy Locally
The reason we have this many ships importing into the USA is due to demand for overseas production through mega corporations, try to do your part and buy local fresh produce, vegetables, etc to diminish demand, (also reduces CO2 emissions)!
Sustainable Seafood
The bycatch of whales occurs through fishing gear set up for other prey to commercially sell; buy sustainable sea food that has not been commercially harvested and does not harm whale species in the ocean. check out what the MSC badge of approval means here: link
